E-Collaboration: hybrid models are more successful

disy Informationssysteme and vitero GmbH have entered a strategic alliance to share knowledge in the field of PSTN/IP telephony and virtual meetings. The first successful project is the new "virtual team room"  which is based on Voice over IP (VoIP) communication. vitero is now integrating disy Conference telephony seamlessly into this solution. This new hybrid system can now be used for many different applications and by multiple user groups.

Recent surveys confirm that Voice over IP technology is setting the future trends. According to a survey conducted by toplink-plannet GmbH and Interactive Intelligence Germany, more than 50% of 100 Web and telephony experts are convinced that IP telephony will be ubiquitous by 2015. This is a clear sign for manufacturers to provide solutions which combine standard and IP telephony.

Lower communication cost is one major benefit of implementing IP telephony. Collaboration tools, on the other hand, enable users to connect locations and organisations with each other, and to optimise processes.  The gap between standard PSTN and future-orientated IP telephony in e-collaboration tools is intelligently closed by combining disy Conference and vitero products.

Vitero's "virtual team room" is an intelligent collaboration tool. It supports synchronous teamwork and communication within the network thanks to the outstanding design of the human-machine interface. People are used to think spatially, to link information to locations; they are aware of spatial relations and social context in virtual spaces. The vitero solution includes these behaviour patterns.

disy Conference combines standard telephony and web technologies to provide a basis for multiple voice solutions. In addition, it can easily be integrated into other applications and business areas, such as customer relationship management.

The new solution, which combines disy Conference and vitero systems, will soon allow users to join a vitero meeting by using the phone or VoIP. They will also benefit from many additional features, like the so-called dial-out option, which enables participants to instantly join a meeting via mobile phone. vitero uses disy Conference’s open interfaces to incorporate all functions. These interfaces are available in the form of web services and allow to easily integrate conferencing into other applications. The partners will present a first version of its combined system at CeBIT 2007, and have announced to cooperate on joint projects in the future.

Companies, that want to migrate to IP, will need these hybrid solutions in a medium-rage perspective. Both technologies can exist in parallel, and thus provide a unique added value: on the one hand, voice quality and security of traditional telephony, and, on the other, to interact within the internet. Further advantages are the joint infrastructure for data and speech, more efficient processes thanks to improved CTI, greater flexibility and enhanced accessibility as well as lower travel expenses.
